About Baayen & Associates Appraisers
In 1979, Baayen and Associates Limited was founded as a family business by Hendrik and Johanna Baayen, and was based in Cobourg, Ontario. In 1991, Baayen & Associates Appraisers in Peterborough was formed by Karel Baayen and began as a small residential appraisal office. It has grown steadily over the years to become a full-service appraisal firm that now includes eight appraisers. We’re well known in the central and eastern Ontario regions and we specialize in residential, cottage, farm, commercial, industrial and institutional valuations. Our clients include financial institutions, all levels of government, corporations, law firms and private individuals. Our commitment is to provide accurate, well-researched and objective reports in a timely manner.
Karel Baayen, B.SC., AACI, P.App
Karel has been a member of the Appraisal Institute since 1988. He achieved the CRA designation in 1994 and the AACI designation in 1996. Karel has held several positions with the Appraisal Institute including Chapter Chair, Vice Chair and Secretary, as well as being a mentor to several candidates. He founded Baayen & Associates Appraisers in 1991, carrying on the tradition begun by Hendrik and Johanna Baayen. Karel has extensive experience in all types of real estate, specializing in commercial and industrial property valuations.
Stephen Cairns, CRA, P.App
Stephen has been working with Baayen & Associates Appraisers as a residential appraiser since 2007, has over 25 years experience in the appraisal field and continues to strive to excel. He currently serves as Secretary for the Peterborough/Lindsay Chapter of the Appraisal Institute of Canada. Other educational expertise includes market analysis, economics, construction, report writing, and forest/land management.
Katie Dick, BA, CRA, P.App
Katie has been with Baayen & Associates Appraisers as a residential appraiser since 2015 and has over 10 years experience in the appraisal field. Katie comes from a back ground of environmental research and technology in the private and public sectors. Her family and love of the outdoors keeps her active in the surrounding areas.
Tim M.
Tim is a member of the Appraisal Institute of Canada and is finishing up his studies in pursuit of his AACI designation which will enable him to specialize in a wide range of commercial assignments while continuing to appraise residential dwellings. With an extensive background as an entrepreneur in sales, marketing and management, Tim brings his work ethic and client focus to each of his appraisals. Tim lives in Lakefield with his wife and teenage daughters.
Pam Birrell
Pam joined Baayen and Associates in 2018 as a Candidate. She holds a Bachelor of Administrative Studies (Honours) from Trent University and an Associateship with the Royal Conservatory of Toronto. A life-long Peterborough resident, Pam also works as a landlord, performer, and voice teacher. Her knowledge of rental markets, the Kawartha Lakes area and local cottage country is an invaluable asset to the firm.
Christian McNab, B.Sc.
Christian is an AIC Candidate Member with over 3 years residential appraisal experience in Peterborough and surrounding area, and a lifelong Peterborough Resident and Trent alumni with a Bachelor’s Degree in Biology(Honours). Currently living in Peterborough with his partner and two dogs, Christian is greatly looking forward to completing his AACI designation.
Ashvin Mohindra, M.Sc.
Ashvin joined Baayen and Associates as an AIC candidate in 2022. He holds a Masters degree in Biology and since 2010 has been a Federal Auditor/Educator for labs throughout Canada for accreditation and testing purposes. Having grown up in Peterborough, Ashvin knows the neighbourhoods and surrounding areas and brings a wealth of knowledge and attention to detail into his inspections. He began appraising various forms of residential properties including executive homes, rural properties, land, multi-family, new developments and looks forward to working with you on your appraisal needs.
Christine Baayen, Office Manager
Christine is a professional artist who specializes in painting and is a practicing ceramicist and spends her spare time training dogs. Christine is our administrator who deals with quotations and assigning appraisers to the appropriate appraisal requests within the firm. She answers the phones and answers pertinent questions to real estate appraising.
Hendrik Baayen, AACI, P.App (Ret.), SRPA, SRA, PLE – In Memorium 1937-2022
Hendrik was a member of The Appraisal Institute of Canada since 1965. He achieved his CRA and AACI designations in the seventies and his SRPA (US) in 1991. Hendrik held several positions with local and national offices of the Institute including President of the Ontario Association. He had sixteen years of experience as commercial mortgage underwriter with major financial institutions.
